Learning Purpose

ICT
 - Students enjoy using technology.
 - Students are confident in using the computers and Paint
   software.

English

 - Students understand that visual and auditory works can be used to
   represent the written word.

   others.
 - Students understand that we use familiar language structures
and features so that writing can be interpreted easily by others.

Preparation and Resources

Four digital cameras
Paper and pencils to brainstorm

Four note takers (voice recorders)
Reporters Worksheet
Staff members willing to be interviewed.

Pencils and paper to brainstorm
School uniform policy handbook
Four computers with Paint installed.
Uniform templates

Learning Experience

The main aim of the lesson is to enable the students to capture their school in different ways with the use of technology. The results of their activities will be used in Lesson 2. The lesson caters for different learning styles (auditory, visual, tactile) which increases student enjoyment and success.

Begin with a flyover using Google Earth to show the location of their city Mandurah.

The students will be divided into three groups.

All group activities will be explained on the board at the beginning of the lesson.

1)The Reporters - These students will work in pairs and use the note takers to interview one member of staff per group e.g. Principal, Canteen Manger, Computing Teacher and Music Teacher . They will use the Reporters Worksheet as a guide but will record all answers on the note taker as an audio file.

2)The Photographers - The photographers will use the digital cameras to document the school environment. They will work in pairs and plan, edit and organise their results to produce 5 images which they believe best represent their school.  They are required to brainstorm ideas for the first 10 minutes of the lesson.

3)The Artists - These students will create a visual artwork of their school uniforms using the templates provided for use onto Paint. They will be working in pairs using the classroom computers. They need to sketch and make notes on the school uniform as a group before beginning the activity.

Student Evaluation

Document students ability to accurately follow the process for their group and use of technology.
Observe group interactions and participation.
Discuss reporters ability with other staff members who participated in the activity.

Lesson 2
Documenting our School

Students Prior Knowledge and Experience

Students are confident in using the technology and are able to work collaboratively to produce a completed piece of work.

Learning Purpose

ICT

 - Students are able to use the technology as appropriate for their group
   activity.

 - Students are able retrieve and use their results from the devices to
   enhance their presentations.

English

 - Students create simple narratives from their visual images and audio
   recordings.
 - Students are able to sequence visual events.
 - Students can use their audio recordings to construct a written text.
 - Students can produce descriptive captions to accompany their
   artwork/photographs.

Preparation and Resources

Four A3 pieces of paper
Printer and photo paper
Glue sticks

Reporters Worksheet
Photo of each staff member
Glue sticks

Four computers with Paint installed
Printer

Learning Experience

Lesson 2 will use the results of Lesson 1 to construct posters to display around the classroom.

Reporters - The reporters will each have their own Reporters Worksheet. Using the note taker they are required to act as a scribe and transfer the audio responses from Lesson 1 onto their worksheet. They will also glue the appropriate supplied photo onto the worksheet and decorate.

Photographers - The photographers will need to upload their digital images from Lesson 1 onto the computer (with teacher assistance). The photos must be printed and arranged onto an A3 sheet of paper. The students are then required to write a small caption under each image to explain why it is a good representation of their school. The poster should be neat and well presented.

Artists - The artists will continue to complete their Paint artworks on the computers. The images will be printed (with teacher assistance), cut out and glued onto a piece of paper. The students will need to caption (e.g. this is our girls winter uniform), each image and label the items of clothing. The finished work should be attractive and accurate.

Student Evaluation

Observe group collaborations to ensure all students are participating.
Document students ability to complete finished poster.

School Comparison Table to display on SMART Board
Rating Scale

Learning Experience

Lesson 3 begins with a quick overview of the information about our
school obtained from Lessons 1 and 2. We will focus on the basic facts
(location, weather, classrooms, resources, uniforms etc.).

Introduction to country of Uganda - location, weather, economy,
people.

Google Earth will be used to do a 'fly over' to show where Uganda is
located according to our school. This will help the students to become
engaged in the topic and stimulate their existing knowledge about
Africa.

Students view photo of Musiye Primary School and class will brainstorm information on the SMART board about what we think the school will be like.

Watch video from the series 'Around the World in 80 schools' by
Charline Evans.

The students will be asked to consider the differences and similarities
between their school and Musiye Primary School.

Using the table the students will take turns to write on the SMART Board..

Using this table the students are required to write a brief narrative in
their Literacy journals. The title of the narrative is "If I went to school in
Uganda" . They must include at least two similarities and differences.
The narrative must be well organised and presented.

Student Evaluation

Students narratives will be marked using a rating scale to assess their understanding of the topic.
